Quick answers

What is arnis?
A Rust-based tool that generates highly accurate, real-world Minecraft maps using OpenStreetMap and geospatial elevation data.
What does arnis do?
Arnis bridges the gap between real-world geography and voxel environments by automatically generating highly detailed Minecraft worlds. It solves the complex problem of translating massive geospatial datasets into block coordinates by parsing OpenStreetMap data and elevation models. What arnis does

Arnis bridges the gap between real-world geography and voxel environments by automatically generating highly detailed Minecraft worlds. It solves the complex problem of translating massive geospatial datasets into block coordinates by parsing OpenStreetMap data and elevation models. Written in Rust for performance, the algorithm accurately maps terrain, topography, and architectural footprints into both Java and Bedrock editions. The system features a graphical interface built with Tauri, allowing users to simply select a bounding box on a map to initiate generation. By automating this geographic translation, it enables players to explore 1:1 scale replicas of actual cities and natural landscapes in-game.

Minecraft players, server administrators, and educators wanting to create accurate real-world maps in-game. No programming experience required to use the graphical interface.

  • OpenStreetMap integration: Directly consumes rich OSM data to accurately place roads, buildings, and natural features.
  • Elevation modeling: Processes real-world topographic data to generate accurate terrain heightmaps within the game engine.
  • Cross-edition compatibility: Outputs world files natively supporting both Minecraft Java Edition (1.17+) and Bedrock Edition.
  • Rust powered algorithm: Leverages Rust's performance characteristics to efficiently process large-scale geographic datasets.
  • Tauri graphical interface: Provides a user-friendly map selection tool, eliminating the need for complex command-line coordinate entry.

Where teams use it

Generating hometown replicas

Minecraft players can select their real-world neighborhood on the map and instantly generate a playable voxel version of it.

Key objectives of this project
  • Modularity: Ensure that all components (e.g., data fetching, processing, and world generation) are cleanly separated into distinct modules for better maintainability and scalability.
  • Performance Optimization: We aim to maintain strong performance and fast world generation.
  • Comprehensive Documentation: Detailed in-code documentation for a clear structure and logic.
  • User-Friendly Experience: Focus on making the project easy to use for end users.
  • Cross-Platform Support: We want this project to run smoothly on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
How to contribute

This project is open source and welcomes contributions from everyone! Whether you're interested in fixing bugs, improving performance, adding new features, or enhancing documentation, your input is valuable. Simply fork the repository, make your changes, and submit a pull request. Please respect the above-mentioned key objectives. Contributions of all levels are appreciated, and your efforts help improve this tool for everyone.

Command line Build: cargo run --release --no-default-features -- --output-dir="C:/YOUR_PATH/.minecraft/saves/worldname" --bbox="min_lat,min_lng,max_lat,max_lng"
GUI Build: cargo run --release

--mode selects what gets generated, mirroring the GUI's generation mode dropdown:

Mode Result
geo-terrain (default) Buildings, roads and other OSM objects on real elevation terrain
geo-only OSM objects on flat ground
terrain-only Real elevation terrain, no objects at all (skips the OpenStreetMap query and the Overture fetch entirely, so --overture has no effect)

--one-world generates into one persistent Java world that every later run extends (see docs/one_world.md); --output-dir is then the saves folder and --world-name picks the world in it:

cargo run --release --no-default-features -- --one-world --output-dir="C:/YOUR_PATH/.minecraft/saves" --world-name="My City" --bbox="min_lat,min_lng,max_lat,max_lng"

Every area is placed in the same Web Mercator frame, so neighbouring areas join seamlessly; the first run fixes scale, terrain mode and build height, and rotation is off. In the GUI the same mode is the One World toggle under Settings > World.

After your pull request is merged, I will take care of regularly creating update releases which will include your changes.

If you are using Nix, you can run the program directly with nix run github:louis-e/arnis -- --output-dir=YOUR_PATH/.minecraft/saves/worldname --bbox="min_lat,min_lng,max_lat,max_lng"

<img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/66efe824-53ec-49cc-86bf-5c8342b63251" width="100%" alt="Banner"> Arnis now places real signs, along with traffic signs, house numbers, and other details. Trees are now placed based on a real canopy height map, so they're actually as tall as they measure. Coastlines got a lot of attention this time. The satellite water mask gets traced and straightened now for a cleaner shoreline. Buildings got more details now, with details that had been missing before. And if a city is not enough, the scale now goes down to 0.05 and the terrain sinks into the lower half of the extended build height datapack. Smaller things: the GUI remembers your settings, lots of bug fixes, local .osm files work as input, you can point Bedrock at your own save folder, and building heights come from Overture where OSM has none. ## Assets * Windows: arnis-windows.exe * Linux: arnis-linux * MacOS: arnis-mac-universal **Scroll down to find the download in _Assets._** ## What's Changed <details> <summary>Click to expand</summary> ## What's Changed * Refactor CLI terrain / object flag behavior by @louis-e in https://github.com/louis-e/arnis/pul

  3. Contour Update (v3.0.0)v3.0.0Jul 11, 202689.1K downloads

<img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f19d1e12-b10a-4da8-a6ab-ab0ce8e2d984" width="100%" alt="Banner"> This is the largest release in Arnis's history since v2.0.0, and it starts from the ground up. The terrain engine has been upgraded with a high-resolution elevation dataset across 20+ countries, partially down to 1 meter detail. You can now preview the terrain in 3D before you generate your world. On top of that, real world climate now decides your biomes and ground materials, so a Mediterranean town, an alpine valley and a boreal forest each feel distinct, with almost 500 new trees species planted throughout. Generated cities now feel more vivid, with cars on parking lots, boats in the water, cranes and excavators on construction sites, water fountains, and many more details. Can you find the SpaceX Starship? New world setup options let you choose your game mode and time of day, and you spawn with a map item already in hand. ## Assets * Windows: arnis-windows.exe * Linux: arnis-linux * MacOS: arnis-mac-universal **Scroll down to find the download in _Assets._** ## What's Changed <details> <summary>Click to expand</summary> ## What's Changed *

<img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d05be96b-4f81-46eb-9100-b5c67e0d1466" width="100%" alt="Banner"> This update is mostly about speed and memory. Arnis now streams the world to disk as it generates instead of holding all of it in memory, so it uses far less RAM and handles much larger areas, and it now spreads the work across all of your CPU cores to generate faster. For survival players, ores now spawn underground when the Fill Ground option is enabled. The world itself feels more natural too: biomes are taken from real land cover, forests have more tree species and variety, lakes and seabeds get layered underwater terrain and plants, and mountains above the snow line are capped in snow. Roads now scale to their real lane count, parking lots look cleaner, airports get proper runways with markings and parked planes, and additional new landmarks are rendered in 3D. Ultimately, the mods Voxy and Chunky now have better support with the bake lighting option in the settings. ## Assets * Windows: arnis-windows.exe * Linux: arnis-linux * MacOS: arnis-mac-universal **Scroll down to find the download in _Assets._** ## What's Changed <details> <summary>Cl

Bridges are reconstructed as proper structures with different types. Buildings get a visual upgrade, icluding construction sites and ruins. The map preview now has a modern map available for selection. River shorelines are now cleaner, and a new Legacy Terrain option lets you trade the high resolution elevation pipeline for faster generation. Experimental: Arnis can now export to Luanti (Mineclonia) worlds alongside Java and Bedrock Minecraft. ## Assets * Windows: arnis-windows.exe * Linux: arnis-linux * MacOS: arnis-mac-universal **Scroll down to find the download in _Assets._** ## What's Changed <details> <summary>Click to expand</summary> ## What's Changed * Feature/building rendering overhaul by @louis-e in https://github.com/louis-e/arnis/pull/1010 * Resolve bridges into structures with approach-ramp detection by @louis-e in https://github.com/louis-e/arnis/pull/1013 * Render
